Contaminating the environment with unpleasant odors and moisture in rooms can cause discomfort or lead to a variety of infections and diseases for both animals and humans.

Animals excrete ammonia because they cannot decompose the nitrogen consumed in their diet. Ammonia is, by definition a colorless alkaline compound in the gaseous state that is highly soluble in water and has a characteristic pungent odor. It is lighter than air and formed by the degradation of the majority of organic substances based on nitrogen. Inhalation affects the upper respiratory tract and irritates the mucous membranes of the eyes. Milder intoxications include headache, nausea, vomiting, and confusion; severe intoxication may include unconsciousness, respiratory arrest, and cardiac arrhythmias.

Nitrogen is found in the urine where it is harmless, but there are enzymes in the bovine stool that form ammonia when mixed with the urine. This is dangerous for the health of the animals and especially for their respiratory organs. The problem of ammonia is indoors, especially in larger farms and indoor dairy farms, where liquid and solid waste is mixed on the ground.
